Participation in the National Data Privacy Week

“On 27th January 2021, our Principal Partner, (who doubles as Head, Legal and Compliance at Maxut Consulting Limited (a National Information Technology Development Agency, licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation)) moderated a webinar session on Day 3 of the NITDA organized National Privacy Week. The National Privacy Week, which held from Monday 25th January 2021 to Thursday 28th 2021 was to celebrate the World Data Privacy Day.

At the webinar titled “Online Privacy Protection; NIN – Preserving Privacy, Promoting the Digital Economy”, several issues surrounding data privacy and protection were discussed by stakeholders made up of representatives from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Private Practitioners and Data Protection Experts.

Specifically, key issues relating to the privacy of citizens’ data being collected at the various NIMC enrollment centers and the Draft Data Protection Bill were also discussed. The point of convergence amongst stakeholders at the webinar was that the promotion of the digital economy through enhanced data privacy practices and proper maintenance of a digital national database, in line with international best practices is of utmost importance.

NITDA, during the webinar took the opportunity to enlighten participants and the general public on the measures it has put in place to ensure that data breaches are minimised and the security of personal data is ensured.”
